This guide is designed to help you understand how to work effectively with an interpreter. Following these guidelines ensures clear communication and a successful experience for everyone involved.
Who is an Interpreter?
An interpreter is a trained professional who listens to spoken language in one language and conveys the meaning in another language. Their role is to facilitate communication, not to offer advice, opinions, or personal input.
Before the Session
Inform the Interpreter of any specialized terms, acronyms, or topics that may come up.
Ensure a Quiet Environment for clear audio, especially for phone or video calls.
Allow Enough Time for interpretation. Sessions may take longer with an interpreter.
During the Session
✅ Do:
Speak Directly to the Other Person, not the interpreter. For example, say “How are you feeling today?” instead of “Can you ask her how she’s feeling?”
Speak Clearly and at a Moderate Pace.
Pause Frequently to allow time for interpretation, especially for longer statements.
Use Simple Language and avoid slang or jargon when possible.
Be Patient — accurate interpretation takes time.
❌ Avoid:
Asking the interpreter for personal opinions.
Speaking over the interpreter or the other person.
Using idioms or humor that may not translate well.
Having side conversations the interpreter is not included in.
Interpreter’s Role
Neutral and Confidential: Interpreters do not take sides and follow strict confidentiality guidelines.
Literal and Accurate: They will interpret everything said, including side comments or inappropriate language.
Clarifies When Necessary: The interpreter may ask for repetition or clarification to ensure accurate interpretation.
Common Misunderstandings
They’re Not a Translator: Translators work with written text; interpreters work with spoken language.
They’re Not Advocates: They do not influence outcomes or offer advice.
They’re Not Cultural Brokers: Their role is communication—not cultural interpretation unless explicitly trained to do so.
After the Session
Ask the interpreter if there were any communication issues that should be noted for next time.
Provide feedback to improve future interpreting services.
