Errors in English Grammar - Contractions and Marital Status

Today, I want to share two teachable moments. It occurred to me that these could be common errors among students who are learning English.

The contraction, “he’s” is a replacement for “he is” and does not need to be used with “is” after it. One of our students recently wrote, “He’s is Tommy.” The corrected version of this should be, “He is Tommy” or “He’s Tommy.”

Also, in English, we say, “He is married.” We don’t say, “He’s a married” unless we have the word “man” after it. The corrected sentence is, “He’s married.” You could also say, “He’s a married man.”
