How to Teach English Language Learners in the Classroom and Train in the Workplace Using SIOP

What is SIOP training?

SIOP stands for Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol. In short, it is an approach to teaching that benefits all learners, and not just English language learners (also known as ELLs). It is a researched-based framework for planning lessons and delivering them in a way that helps students learn grade-level content while developing English language skills. The training gives teachers tools and strategies to make content comprehensible for all students.

It involves the following:

  • Lesson planning that not only includes content objectives, but also language objectives.

  • Building background knowledge

  • Using clear and concise language

  • Incorporating various teaching strategies that help different learning styles

  • Providing opportunities for talking & interacting to collaborate

  • Making sure students can practice and apply what they are learning

  • Assessing student understanding

While SIOP training is usually aimed at teachers in schools, its principles could be applied to training people in other settings in which there are adult English language learners.

  • What key vocabulary does your organization use regularly? Are there signs that show what these things mean? (Not everyone who speaks English is able to read it.)

  • Avoid using idioms and sarcasm. These are not easily understood and may slow down communication. (Sarcasm is often not appreciated even by native English speakers.)

  • Are there opportunities to train staff and have them practice before they do the things you want the to do?

  • How often do you assess your teammates for understanding, so that you can course correct before too many mistakes have been made?

  • What do you do to encourage people who are making progress?
